We recently had a chat with Dee Brinsmead from Marry Me Dee about Celebrant Life –
• How did you get into being a celebrant?
I went through a stretch where I was attending a lot of weddings and they were all the same dull boring ceremonies that had the same generic stuff spoken in a way that almost sent you to sleep. So during a ceremony as I was thinking about what I would do the next day, I realized how important the rite of passage was that my friends were entering and I went on an expedition to find out if it could be done differently….and guess what? It could!
• Why do you enjoy what you do?
I love my job because I know that I can give my clients a personal ceremony to reflect who they are and I know that the guests attending will walk away feeling the way they should after a great ceremony. I know that the ceremony will be remembered by everyone as one of the best parts of the day. Also there’s the glass of champagne I get at the end which is the icing on the cake:)
• Who trained you and what are they up to now?
I trained through the International College of Celebrancy Association (ICCA). This house was a Diploma which I believe gave me more insight to the history of ceremony, providing a better understanding of the importance of the role of the celebrant. Most people do the cert 4.
• What’s the biggest mistakes and myths about wedding celebrants?
That they are boring. However this is sadly the case in many instances where celebrants have a template and add a few personal details, calling it a personal ceremony. Little imagination or creativity.
• What are your favourite instructional books or resource on what you do? what book or resource should a bride or groom read before their wedding?
None at all, there are very few actual rules when it comes to writing/presenting a ceremony so the world is your oyster. I say get creative, have a bottle of wine and let’s see what we can do. As long as it always reflects who the couple is, there shouldn’t ever be an issue.
• What do you believe about the wedding industry that no one else believes?
I believe the ceremony is the most important part of the day, the prelude to the party if you will:) Everyone gets so bogged down with the cake and the color of the napkins etc, but none of that matters at the end of the day because with out the ceremony it’s just an expensive party. Trust me you really DO want a spectacular ceremony with lots of personality and bang!
• In the lead up to a wedding, what have you noticed your clients doing that ensures a great wedding experience?
Not freaking out over the small stuff.
• What is the disaster that you closely averted, that the client never even knew about?
How much time do you have?
• What trends have you noticed over the last 12 months?
None, or if there were they were to boring to take notice. Although there is this really edgy registry style wedding thing that opened up called The Altar Electric which is apparently is the most innovative thing to happen in the wedding world for the past 5 years. I have this on good authority.
• What trends do you see developing over the next few years?
More registry – vegas style weddings.
• What wedding trends are you seeing overseas that you hope come to Australia?
Nothing, it’s all a bit ho hum…
• What kinds of wedding ceremonies are you not good at?
Boring, cheesy crap and those that are not authentic and true to the couple getting hitched. If a couple aren’t willing to open up with me, and I mean really open up then it’s all going to be surface based stuff.
• What is your advice for people that have just had their wedding and they want to start their own wedding business?
Good luck, it’s a dog eat dog world out there. Unless you have something missing in the industry and from what I can see it’s things like being more creative and going outside your comfort zone because every wedding should NOT look or sound the same. Wedding venues in particular please take note of that one.
• How can people get in contact with you?
It’s easy peasy!
